English Upper Intermediate 1

Course information

The language course English Upper Intermediate 1 is suitable for students with a reasonably advanced knowledge of English. For example, you should be able to discuss symptoms or complaints with a family doctor and to understand a television programme about a familiar topic.

This course focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening. Grammar and vocabulary are also addressed as components of these skills.

During English Upper Intermediate 1, you will learn how to write and tell stories. In the process, you will use vocabulary to indicate cause and effect (caused byeffect and affect) and use descriptive language (disappointingmind-blowingdull and unforgettable).

Skills you will have mastered by the end of this course include being able to understand complex spoken instructions and being able to carry on a fluent conversation without having to think for long about your response. You will also be able to understand the content of a news report, article or blog with ease.

The grammar covered in English Upper Intermediate 1 includes the formation of positive and negative questions (Why isn’t my computer working?) and indirect questions (Can you tell me…?). By the end of this course you will be familiar with many different verb forms in the present and past tenses.

If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate showing the level you have attained and you will be able to continue to English Upper Intermediate 2.
