French level 8

Course information

Upon successful completion of this course, you will have attained level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference. That means you are officially an independent user of the language! During French level 8, you will learn such things as:

• how to introduce yourself in a pitch, job interview or motivation letter
• how to describe a work of art and give your opinion about it
• how to adjust your language to a situation, such as a formal meeting

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for you if you can speak French at a fairly high level. For example, you can already read and speak French reasonably fluently. You can write detailed texts, for example an open letter or a summary. You can understand a podcast on a familiar or less familiar subject.

What will you learn?

During the French level 8 course, you improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills on the topics of work, art, the French language, games and humour.

Once you have completed the course, you will be able to join in a conversation on the history of the French language, its geographical distribution and La Francophonie, the organisation of French-speaking countries. You will also learn the differences between the French language registers familier (informal), courant (neutral) and soutenu (formal).

Have you ever tried to explain the rules of a game in a foreign language? This is something you will also learn in this course, along with such expressions as à ton tour (your turn) and être mauvais perdant (a bad loser).

Telling a joke in another language is often tricky, but after this course, you will be able to tell jokes in French. You will learn things like the correct intonation and pronunciation, and how to explain a joke.

Upon successful completion of French level 8 you will be able to write flowing tests, for example a summary, a motivation letter or an argument. You will also be able to take notes during a presentation or a meeting.

And grammar?

The grammar you learn during this course includes:

• the subjunctive mood in clauses, such as une carte qui te permette… (a card that allows you to…)
• complex denials and their opposites
• the present participle (participe présent) and the verbal adjective (l’adjectif verbal)
