Portuguese language courses

During the Portuguese courses you will work on developing your skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Grammar and vocabulary are also an important part of the courses.

A course book is used, but this does not mean that every lesson follows the same format. Much time is spent practising with role-playing and other speaking and listening exercises.

All lessons are taught by teachers with experience and expertise who are native Portuguese speakers.

Standard Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese

At UvA Talen you can learn two types of Portuguese: European Portuguese (as spoken in Portugal) and Brazilian Portuguese (as spoken in Brazil). For the sake of clarity, we call these courses ‘Portuguese’ and ‘Brazilian'.

The grammar rules of European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese are almost identical, with just a few minor exceptions. The main differences between the two are in vocabulary and pronunciation, so these aspects are covered comprehensively in the lessons.

Each course uses a textbook specifically aimed at the type of Portuguese in question.
