English Advanced 1

Course information

English Advanced 1 is intended for students with an advanced knowledge of English. You should be able to carry on a conversation without thinking too long about how to formulate a reaction and be able to read texts on a wide range of topics.

This course focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening. Grammar and vocabulary are also covered as components of these skills.

During English Advanced 1, you will be introduced to the nuances of spoken English. For example, you will learn to idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms, and you will become increasingly adept at using figurative and witty language. If you make an error in speech, you will be able to correct yourself without interruption.

By the end of this course, you will be able to write texts as an independent language user. For example, you will be able to write a reaction in which you use such vocabulary as you’re spot on and I’m in two minds about that. You will be able to read texts on a variety of topics, including private, academic and professional.

The grammar covered during English Advanced 1 is of a high level. Skills you will learn include the use of the future in the past (he was about to get on the bus) and compound nouns (game consolepasser-by).

If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate showing the level you have attained and you will be able to continue to English Advanced 2.
