UvA Talen translates for Rijksmuseum Boerhaave
UvA Talen regularly provides translations for a large number of museums in the Netherlands (and beyond). In September 2018 our team started work on translating a range of texts from Dutch into English for the exhibition Herman Boerhaave and the Golden Age of Science in Rijksmuseum Boerhaave in Leiden.
Herman Boerhaave and the Golden Age of Science
This special exhibition now open in Rijksmuseum Boerhaave was created to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the birth of Herman Boerhaave, famous Leiden physician, anatomist, botanist, physicist, humanist and researcher, who made a huge contribution to Western science. The exhibition takes you back to a time of ground-breaking change and introduces you to famous peers of Boerhaave whose scientific methods transformed the world.
Educational translation
While translating the texts we learned – just as today's visitors to the exhibition in Leiden – all about the discoveries made by Boerhaave and his peers during the Netherlands’ Golden Age of Science. So working on the English texts for the exhibition was not only an interesting experience for our translation team, but also educational. The texts included a number of quotes from Herman Boerhaave himself, always a great challenge!
The project closed with a proofreading round to check the final layout of the English texts before they were printed on the panels for the exhibition. And of course UvA Talen was present at the festive opening of the exhibition, where the team could see the results of their translation work ‘in the flesh'.
